Next Kraftwerke betreibt eines der größten Virtuellen Kraftwerke in Europa. Im Next Pool sind mehr als 15.000 dezentrale Stromerzeuger und -verbraucher über eine Plattform vernetzt und somit über das eigens entwickelte Leitsystem steuerbar. Mit einer vernetzten Erzeugungsleistung von über 12.000 Megawatt trägt Next Kraftwerke zum Ausgleich von Frequenzschwankungen im Netz bei. Zusätzlich optimiert das Kölner Unternehmen, das seit 2021 zur Shell Gruppe gehört, Stromproduktion und -verbrauch der vernetzten Kunden anhand von Preissignalen und handelt über den eigenen 24/7-Stromhandel deren Strom an verschiedenen europäischen Börsen (z. B. EPEX und EEX).
